HC Deb 28 May 1930 vol 239 c1288
43. Mr. VAUGHAN

asked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the number of fatal and non-fatal accidents caused by vehicles mounting footpaths, he will only approve such plans for new road and improvement schemes as have the footpath kerbs 8 inches high in order to confine vehicles to the roads, even when skidding occurs?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

I am advised that kerbs 8 inches in height would constitute a source of danger to all road users, and I am not prepared to take the course suggested by my hon. Friend.

Mr. VAUGHAN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in certain streets in London the kerbs are 8 inches high, and is he also aware that on some of the roads there are 8 miles of kerb of this character?

Mr. MORRISON

I do not think that at present it would be generally desirable.

Sir W. BRASS

Is it not a fact that these kerbs actually cause cars to be turned over?

Mr. MORRISON

That is undoubtedly one of the dangers of a kerb that is unduly high.

Mr. SKELTON

Is it not also the case that such kerbs yield a comfortable profit to those who supply them?
