HC Deb 26 May 1930 vol 239 cc782-3
9. Mr. ANNESLEY SOMERVILLE

asked the Secretary of State for India why the 4th Battalion Bombay Grenadiers has been disbanded?

Mr. BENN

The normal establishment of 100 active battalions of Indian infantry was temporarily increased by the return without replacement of two battalions from Iraq and Aden, where other arrangements have been made. It was decided to reduce two battalions accordingly, and the third and fourth battalions of the 4th Bombay Grenadiers were selected for this purpose in July last year.

Mr. SOMERVILLE

Am I to understand that the disbandment of these battalions has no connection with the present trouble in India, and that there is no suspicion of disloyalty attaching to this gallant regiment?

Mr. BENN

Certainly not. None whatever.
