HC Deb 19 May 1930 vol 239 cc12-3
12. Mr. MARLEY

asked the Secretary of State for India what is the total number of journals and newspapers which have ceased publication since the promulgation of the Press ordinance?

I have not been able in the time available to obtain complete figures, but the Government of India estimate that the approximate numbers are 40 newspapers and 17 weekly or bi-weekly periodicals. There are indications that some of these will shortly resume publication.

May I ask my right hon. Friend if he remembers some of the very eloquent speeches which we have heard from him with regard to the freedom of the Press?
