HC Deb 19 May 1930 vol 239 cc10-1
5. Colonel HOWARD-BURY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether, in view of the voluntary cessation of publication of many newspapers in India and the spreading of inaccurate rumours in consequence, and the fact that the Government of India have taken over the broadcasting, he will take steps to extend the service to all towns in India so that accurate news may be broadcast?

Mr. BENN

This is a matter for the authorities in India. I am afraid, however, having regard to the stage of development reached by broadcasting in India, that the hon. and gallant Member's suggestion is not in any case feasible in the near future.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the Government of India are taking any steps to make it feasible?

Mr. BENN

If the hon. and gallant Member's question refers to broadcasting, I have answered it. If not, it is a separate question, of which I shall be glad to have notice.
