HC Deb 15 May 1930 vol 238 cc2030-1
27. Mr. HOPKIN

asked the Home Secretary if his attention has been drawn to the work done at the Beck Laboratory, Swansea, in the investigation of the causes of fibrosis of the lungs of miners in the anthracite district; and, in view of such work, is he prepared to extend this work so that the staff may give more time to research work in this matter?

Mr. CLYNES

I understand that the work referred to in the question is being carried on as part of a scheme of research organised by Professor Cummins, the Director of the Welsh National Memorial Association. As my hon. Friend is aware, the Medical Research Council has recently set up, at my request, an expert committee on industrial pulmonary diseases, whose duty it is to consider proposals for new inquiries or extending existing inquiries and make recommendations to the council, and I will see that his suggestion is brought to the notice of this committee. I am informed that the council have already made a grant for the expenses in connection with the research at this laboratory.
