asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what were the number of civil servant employés in all Government Departments in April, 1929, and the numbers in April, 1930; and what was the increase or decrease in the annual cost to the Exchequer in salaries and pensions of these employés for the two years ending 5th April, 1929, and 5th April, 1930?

The number of whole time and part time civil employés in all Departments, including staffs employed in Government industrial establishments and the Post Office on the 1st April, 1929, was 434,165. The cost of salaries and wages for the year ended 31st March, 1929, was approximately £84,480,580; and the amount paid in that year in respect of the superannuation privileges of retired civil employés was £6,788,897. I regret that comparable figures for the year ended 31st March, 1930, are not yet available.
