Major POLEasked the Secretary of State for India if he can now give information as to the extent to which freedom of association obtains in the Indian territories under ruling princes; and whether, since the enactment in British India of the India Trade Union Act, similar legislation has been adopted in any of the Indian States?
§ Mr. BENNI am informed by the Government of India that the information is being collected. I will let my hon. and gallant Friend know when it is received.
§ Brigadier-General CLIFTON BROWNHave we not treaties with the various 960 Indian States in regard to this particular legislation; and is it not desirable that we should be very careful at a time like the present not to interfere with any treaty rights of this kind?
§ Mr. BENNI think the hon. and gallant Gentleman may leave this matter to the discretion of the Government of India.
