HC Deb 31 March 1930 vol 237 c865
1. Mr. DAY

asked the Secretary of State for India the number of females employed daily underground in mines under the Indian Mines Act for the 12 months ended to the last convenient date; and can he state the number of reductions that have taken place since the 1st July,, 1929?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Wedgwood Benn)

The average number of women employed underground daily during 1928 was 31,785. I expect to receive the figures for 1929 about the end of July next. As my hon. Friend is aware, there is statutory provision for reduction to a nil figure by July, 1939.

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how many hours these women work?

I will gladly make inquiries if the hon. Member desires.
