HC Deb 27 March 1930 vol 237 cc573-4
2. Mr. MANDER

asked the Minister of Labour if the Government is prepared to consider the appointment of a committee to inquire into the conditions of domestic service, with a view to making recommendations for improving its status and rendering it generally more attractive?

Miss BONDFIELD

There is a report on this subject, of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy, by a committee appointed in 1923. I do not think there would be any advantage in appointing another committee at the present time.

Mr. MANDER

Is the right hon. Lady prepared to reconsider the matter if she is satisfied that public opinion is taking a very deep interest in it?

Miss BONDFIELD

I will certainly consider any suggestion of that kind.

Mr. SANDERS

Is there not sufficient evidence to show that, where hours are reasonable, wages fair and conditions good, there is no difficulty in getting domestic servants?
