§ 90. Mr. JOWETTasked the Minister of Health the number of children for whom out-relief was being paid on the most recent date for which the information is available, and the cost per week of the relief paid on their account?
§ Mr. GREENWOODThe average number of children under 16 years of age in receipt of out-relief in England and Wales during December, 1929, was 331,516. The returns received in my Department do not show separately the amount of out-relief in money and kind afforded to children.
§ Mr. McSHANECan the Department make any rough calculation as to what the amount would be, as is done by the Ministry of Labour?
§ Mr. GREENWOODNo, that is utterly impossible, because the only returns that we get are in one lump sum payable in money and in kind, and they are not differentiated.
§ 91. Mr. JOWETTasked the Minister of Health the number of children of school age in Poor Law institutions, including cottage and other children's homes, on the most recent date for which the information is available?
§ Mr. GREENWOODThe number of children between 3 and 16 years of age in England and Wales in receipt of relief in Poor Law institutions, including cottage and other children's homes and other separate establishments for children on the night of the 1st January, 1929, was 38,476. The returns received in my Department do not distinguish children of school age.
