67. Mr. KINLEY

asked the Minister of Health the total amount spent by local authorities on mental cases during 1929, or the last completed year, and the amount of assistance given by the Government for this purpose?

Mr. GREENWOOD

The expenditure of local authorities in maintaining mental hospitals under the Lunacy Act for the year ended 31st March, 1929, amounted to £7,981,257, exclusive of loan charges. During the same period the expenditure in respect of mental defectives was £607,301 borne by the local authorities, and £609,519 borne by the Exchequer.

asked the Minister of Health the number of establishments in which lunatics are treated and the number of patients therein, showing the positions of those under local authority and private ownership respectively?

As the answer to this question involves a number of statistics, I will, with my hon. Friend's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The following table indicates the number of institutions in which persons of unsound mind (voluntary and certified) are received and the number of patients (voluntary and certified) under care on the 1st January, 1930, in England and Wales:
