HC Deb 13 March 1930 vol 236 cc1473-4
37. Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

asked the Home Secretary how many building societies conduct fire insurance business; and the total fire insurance premiums paid to such societies during the last year for which the figures are available?

Mr. CLYNES

The Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies informed me that, so far as he is aware, no building societies conduct fire insurance business, but there are four societies which are believed to carry all or part of the fire risks in respect of properties in mortgage to them, the premium being paid by the mortgagors. As to the second part of the question, he has no particulars.

Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

Is any action taken to insist that such friendly societies shall give notice to their members of the amount of any risk incurred in this way?

Mr. CLYNES

That is a point of detail of which, perhaps, the hon. and gallant Member will give me notice.

38. Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

asked the Home Secretary the number of cases in which action has been taken against building societies for exceeding their powers under the Building Societies Acts by conducting fire insurance business?

Mr. CLYNES

So far as the Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies is aware, the answer is none.
