HC Deb 24 June 1930 vol 240 c963
53. Mr. WHITE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what loss of revenue would be sustained if the incomes of married persons were separately assessed for Income Tax?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Philip Snowden)

The extent of the loss would largely depend on the amount of redistribution of income between husband and wife that might take place. In certain circumstances the loss might be as much as £35,000,000.
