HC Deb 24 June 1930 vol 240 cc960-1
33. Mr. MACLEAN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he can now state the personnel of the committee he has promised to set up to inquire into the operation of hire-purchase agreements in Scotland and the imprisonment of debtors for failure to maintain their payments?

Mr. JOHNSTON

The members of the committee are as follow:

  • The Honourable Lord Fleming, Chairman.
  • Mr. James Doonan.
  • Mr. James Currie Macbeth.
  • Mr. E. Rosslyn Mitchell.
  • Mrs. E. G. Somerville.
Mr. James Paterson, Sheriff Clerk Depute, Glasgow, has been appointed secretary of the committee.

Mr. MACLEAN

Can the hon. Member inform me where this committee will sit, if the idea is to have it in Glasgow? There could not be a better method than to have it sitting in the four industrial towns in Scotland, where cases under this particular system are most manifest.

Mr. JOHNSTON

I will certainly pass on that suggestion to the appropriate quarter.

Mr. McSHANE

Will the meetings be held in public?

Mr. JOHNSTON

I am not certain, but I understand so.
