33. Mr. MACLEANasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he can now state the personnel of the committee he has promised to set up to inquire into the operation of hire-purchase agreements in Scotland and the imprisonment of debtors for failure to maintain their payments?
§ Mr. JOHNSTONThe members of the committee are as follow:
Mr. James Paterson, Sheriff Clerk Depute, Glasgow, has been appointed secretary of the committee.
- The Honourable Lord Fleming, Chairman.
- Mr. James Doonan.
- Mr. James Currie Macbeth.
- Mr. E. Rosslyn Mitchell.
- Mrs. E. G. Somerville.
Mr. MACLEANCan the hon. Member inform me where this committee will sit, if the idea is to have it in Glasgow? 961 There could not be a better method than to have it sitting in the four industrial towns in Scotland, where cases under this particular system are most manifest.
§ Mr. JOHNSTONI will certainly pass on that suggestion to the appropriate quarter.
§ Mr. McSHANEWill the meetings be held in public?
§ Mr. JOHNSTONI am not certain, but I understand so.
