HC Deb 19 June 1930 vol 240 cc561-2
28. Mr. DAY

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the fact that many shops, especially those in seaside districts, continue to expose for sale indecent postcards, he proposes to introduce legislation governing this subject; and can he say what instructions have been issued to the local police authorities on the matter?

Mr. CLYNES

The police have ample powers under the existing law to deal with the display for sale of postcards which are really indecent, and they would take action in regard to any case which came under their notice. There is no need for special instructions. If my hon. Friend has any information on this subject and will send it to me, I will see that it receives consideration.

Mr. DAY

Has the attention of my right hon. Friend been drawn to a recent case at Brighton, in which it was stated that the police have not sufficient powers?

Mr. CLYNES

No.
