HC Deb 17 June 1930 vol 240 c39
Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is in a position to give further information to the House with regard to the situation in Malta?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Dr. Drummond Shiels)

Owing to the state of public feeling in the Island, the elections are still being held in abeyance by the Governor in the exercise of his reserved powers. The question of what further measures should be taken to deal with the situation is under consideration by His Majesty's Government.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Now that Lord Strickland is in this country, will my hon. Friend give the constitutional Prime Minister of Malta every assistance in dealing with this outbreak of medievalism in Malta?

Dr. SHIELS

The Prime Minister of Malta has already had an opportunity of putting his views before my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is he getting assistance from the Department?

Dr. SHIELS

He will get all proper assistance.
