Mr. HANNONasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been called to the recent issue in New York of a Chilean loan for 25,000,000 United States of America dollars, and that these bonds were subsequently sold on the London market; if he is aware of the restriction on British loans operative in Chile in the form of Government taxes and Stamp Duties and if he will take steps to secure that British and United States of America loan emissions will be treated by the Chilean authorities on the same terms?
§ Mr. GILLETT (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)I am aware of the recent issue in the United States of America of the Chilean loan referred to, but I am unable to say whether, and if so to what extent, these bonds were subsequently sold on the London market. I have no information as to any discrimination by the Chilean authorities against loans in Great Britain, as compared with loans elsewhere, in the form of Chilean Government taxes and Stamp Duties.
