HC Deb 06 June 1930 vol 239 cc2539-40
23. Mr. HANNON

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department if any special instructions have been issued to His Majesty's commercial secretariats and His Majesty's consuls in European countries to endeavour to promote the sale of Kenya coffee.

Mr. GILLETT (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

No Sir: whilst it is an integral part of the duties of such officers to do what lies in their power to help the export trade of the various parts of the Empire, it cannot be expected of them that they should conduct a special campaign in favour of one selected commodity from one particular part of the British Empire.

Mr. HANNON

Is not this particular product of Kenya one of exceptional importance in the development of that Colony; and in view of the high quality of the article, and the extent to which the economic success of that Colony depends upon it, will the hon. Gentleman give instructions to our commercial representatives to say a word on behalf of it?

Mr. GILLETT

If the hon. Member has any special point which he would like to bring before me, I shall be very glad if he will do so.
