HC Deb 30 July 1930 vol 242 cc472-3
21. Mr. MANDER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any change in the constitution of Cyprus, which has existed for the last 50 years, is under consideration?

Dr. SHIELS

The working of the present constitution has been recently under review, but no immediate changes are contemplated.

Mr. MANDER

Is the hon. Gentleman aware of the strong feeling on the subject among certain sections of public opinion in the island?

Dr. SHIELS

Yes, I am aware of the state of public opinion in Cyprus on this and other matters.

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

Is not that feeling largely confined to the lawyer class and a few of the priests?
