HC Deb 30 July 1930 vol 242 cc487-8
42. Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Minister of Transport in what centres of the Metropolitan area automatic traffic signals are now in operation; whether there is any intention of extending the system; and, if so, at what points?

Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

No automatic traffic signals have so far been erected in the Metropolitan area, but there are manually controlled installations in Piccadilly and Ludgate Circus. It is proposed, subject to the concurrence of the local authorities, to make an experiment with an automatic installation in Oxford Street. The question of erecting such signals in other parts of London is under consideration.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

Is the Minister of Transport satisfied that, so far as his experience has gone, they have been successful, and does he think it is desirable to continue them?

Mr. MORRISON

Within their limits and for their purpose, they have been successful, but neither of the experiments so far come up to the modern standard of the Ministry of Transport.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

What is the modern standard of the Ministry of Transport?

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

It is a very high standard.
