HC Deb 17 July 1930 vol 241 cc1439-40
13. Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Labour how many aliens were permitted to enter this country during last June for the purpose of taking up clerical employment?

Miss BONDFIELD

The number of aliens admitted to this country in June, 1930, for clerical occupations of all kinds, including those admitted as students, visitors, etc., but subsequently permitted to accept such employment, was 84. Most of these were young persons occupying supernumerary posts for limited periods, not usually exceeding 12 months, in order to obtain some knowledge of the English language and British business methods.

Mr. WILLIAMS

What proportion of the 84 remain here permanently?

Miss BONDFIELD

I should say none.

14. Mr. DOUGLAS HACKING

asked the Minister of Labour the number of permits issued by her since June, 1929, to enable Russian nationals to obtain employment in this country?

Miss BONDFIELD
