HC Deb 16 July 1930 vol 241 c1279
57. Mr. KELLY

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department whether he is in a position to make a further announcement regarding the proposed mission to South Africa?

Mr. GILLETT (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

The Economic Mission to South Africa will consist, in addition to Lord Kirkley, the Chairman, of:

  • Sir Francis L'Estrange Joseph, C.B.E., J.P.,
  • Mr. John Morgan, and
  • Mr. Robert Waddington.
  • Mr. J. W. Brigden, His Majesty's Trade Commissioner for the United Kingdom at Johannesburg will act as Secretary to the Mission.

Mr. HAYCOCK

Why are not commercial travellers or salesmen sent on this mission?

Mr. GILLETT

The members we desire to have are men of different experience from that suggested.

Mr. HAYCOCK

Why not get some people who have experience in salesmanship, and not commercial brass hats?
