HC Deb 14 July 1930 vol 241 c921
45. Mr. DAY

asked the Prime Minister whether he will consider the introduction of legislation which will have as its object the raising of a special tax on mineral royalties and the allocation of a portion of it to relief in the distressed areas in the coal-mining centres?

The PRIME MINISTER

I am sorry, but I do not think that this would be a profitable way of dealing with either of the subjects referred to in the question.

Mr. DAY

Can my right hon. Friend say whether it has been considered, alto can he give the House any reason for his refusal?

Mr. MARDY JONES

Would it not be much better to keep this in mind when my right hon. Friend deals with the nationalisation of mining royalties?

The PRIME MINISTER

It is in that direction that the question could more appropriately be dealt with.
