HC Deb 14 July 1930 vol 241 c900
11. Mr. BROCKWAY

asked the Secretary of State for India whether the wearing of the Gandhi cap has been prohibited in any part of India?

Mr. BENN

Beyond Press reports I have no information on this point except that the wearing of congress emblems was forbidden while martial law was in force in Sholapur.

Mr. BROCKWAY

May I ask whether my right hon. Friend is aware that in the district of Guntur—[HON. MEMBERS: "Do not read!"]—I am not reading—an official order has been issued prohibiting the wearing of the Gandhi cap?

Mr. BENN

I have seen a quotation to that effect, but, as I have said, I have no other information on the subject.

Mr. BROCKWAY

I have a copy in my possession, and I will forward it to the right hon. Gentleman. Does he really consider that the wearing of a simple cap of this kind is dangerous to British administration in India?

HON. MEMBERS

Put it on!

Mr. THURTLE

Will the right hon. Gentleman make inquiries into this matter, and, if need be, make representations to the Government of India to the effect that this is quite unnecessary?
