HC Deb 30 January 1930 vol 234 cc1165-6
56. Mr. LOVAT-FRASER

asked the Minister of Health if he is aware that tenants of council houses in Croydon, which are let at rents too high for the average working man, are receiving poor relief and using part of it to pay their rents; and whether he intends to take any action in the matter?

Mr. GREENWOOD

I am informed that a small proportion of the tenants of the local authority are temporarily in receipt of Poor Law relief The amount of the rents to be fixed for the houses is a question for the council, and I do not think that the matter is one in which I can take any action.

Lieut.-Colonel FREMANTLE

Does the right hon. Gentleman agree that this is an extremely good way of giving relief according to need where required?
