HC Deb 27 January 1930 vol 234 c595
28. Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any information as to the result of the placing of the proposals regarding the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty before the Egyptian people on the lines set out in a letter to him from Mahommed Mahmoud Pasha dated 3rd August, 1929?

Mr. A. HENDERSON

I have nothing to add to the reply returned to the hon. and gallant Member for Gainsborough on Tuesday last.

Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

Is it not the case that the letter referred to in the question definitely states that the proposals should be put before the Egyptian people? Is the right hon. Gentleman satisfied that that has been done?

Mr. HENDERSON

The Treaty has not yet been drawn. The conditions that were laid down have so far been fulfilled.

Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

I think the right hon. Gentleman is forgetting. [HON. MEMBERS: "Speech!"] I do not want to embarrass the right hon. Gentleman in any way. May I ask whether the condition was that the proposals should be put before the Egyptian people? It is not a question of the Treaty at all.

Mr. HENDERSON

My opinion is that the proposals have been submitted to the Egyptian people.

Captain CROOKSHANK

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman on what he bases that statement?
