HC Deb 18 February 1930 vol 235 cc1122-3
3. Mr. C. WILLIAMS

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the approximate number of companies that are in default in filing, within the prescribed period, their accounts for the previous year; and what steps he is taking to insist that the law shall be punctually observed with regard to the issue of audited accounts?

Mr. W. R. SMITH

About 2,600 companies are in default in filing their balance sheet. It is the Registrar's practice to circularise early in the year all companies which have not filed an annual return in respect of the previous year. In those cases in which this procedure fails to secure the return the matter is put in the hands of the Solicitor to the Board of Trade, and, when necessary, legal proceedings are taken.

Mr. THURTLE

What period of time elapses after the sending out of these circulars, before action is taken?

Mr. SMITH

I could not say the exact time, but generally the circulars have the desired result.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Can the hon. Gentleman give the approximate number who are prosecuted each year?

Mr. SMITH

Not without notice.
