HC Deb 10 February 1930 vol 235 cc20-1
45. Mr. HASLAM

asked the Prime Minister if he will give an undertaking that an opportunity will be given for a full discussion before any agreement relating to a tariff truce is entered into?

The PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Ramsay MacDonald)

As was stated on the 23rd December in reply to a question by the hon. and gallant Member for Maidstone (Commander Bellairs), any international agreement which may be signed on this subject will be laid before Parliament before ratification. Moreover, I understand that it has been agreed through the usual channels that this question of a tariff truce agreement shall be discussed in Committee of the Civil Vote on Account.

Mr. A. M. SAMUEL

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that the very proposal of a tariff truce is already doing an immense amount of harm to our manufacturers?

The PRIME MINISTER

My information is to the opposite effect.

Mr. SAMUEL

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that a Resolution has been passed by the Chambers of Commerce to that effect?

Mr. HACKING

Does Parliament in this case mean the House of Commons or both Houses?

Mr. C. WILLIAMS
