HC Deb 03 February 1930 vol 234 c1486
37. Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department what is the present duty in South Africa upon imported boots and shoes from this country; whether any proposals have been made for an increase in this duty; and whether any representations have been made to him in regard to the matter?

Mr. GILLETT

The present duty is 30 per cent. ad valorem. I am informed by the Federated Associations of Boot and Shoe Manufacturers of Great Britain and Ireland that the question of its increase has been discussed in certain South African newspapers. I have, however, made inquiry and am given to understand that the question has not been referred to the Union Board of Trade and Industry for investigation.
