HC Deb 03 February 1930 vol 234 cc1502-3
77. Mr. KELLY

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office the number of men and women employed in the canteens at the various Army quarters; and the working conditions, hours, and wages operating in this work?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the WAR OFFICE (Mr. Shinwell)

These employés are not paid from public funds, and I have no information as to their numbers and conditions of employment, which are fixed by the board of management of the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes.

Mr. KELLY

In view of the representation of the War Office on this board, have they no responsibility for the working conditions and hours and the wages of these people?

Mr. SHINWELL

The working conditions are really a matter for the board of management, but, if my hon. Friend is very keen on having the information, I will see if I can obtain it for him.

Mr. MACQUISTEN

Is there not always keen competition to serve in the canteens?

Mr. SHINWELL

I am afraid that I cannot express any opinion on that matter.
