HC Deb 01 August 1930 vol 242 cc899-900
19. Major POLE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the rubber planters in Malaya have forwarded a request to the government in Malaya to amend the existing legislation governing the wage rates of Indian labourers so as to enable them to reduce the rates of pay on the estates; and whether the said gov- ernment have under consideration any such alteration of the present wage legislation?

Dr. SHIELS

My noble Friend has no information that such a request has been received by the Malayan Governments or that they are considering the matter, but he will make inquiries.

Major POLE

Will the hon. Gentleman let me know when he receives the information?

Dr. SHIELS

Certainly.

Mr. WELLOCK

Will the Under-Secretary keep his eye on the Workmen's Compensation Act?

Dr. SHIELS

Yes, Sir; I have that in mind.
