HC Deb 30 April 1930 vol 238 c195
37. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the President of the Board of Trade what negotiations are taking place, or have taken place, since the Government came into office for the purpose of keeping sweated goods from coming into this country?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. W. R. Smith)

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply returned to a question asked by the hon. Member for Gravesend (Mr. Albery) on the 21st January, of which I am sending him a copy.

Commander BELLAIRS

Can the hon. Gentleman point to any instance in which sweated goods have been kept out of this country by the Labour Government?

Mr. ALBERY

Can the hon. Member indicate any steps whatever which have been taken by his Government since they came into office?

Mr. SMITH

Oh, yes, I think an attempt has been made to get some regular understanding in regard to miners' hours.

Sir W. DAVISON

Is the hon. Member aware that a large number of British working men are kept out of employment by the foreign sweated goods which come in?
