HC Deb 29 April 1930 vol 238 cc4-5
5. Mr. LOUIS SMITH

asked the Lord Privy Seal when he anticipates being able to inform the House that a substantial order for steel sleepers is likely to be placed with the. British steel trade?

Mr. THOMAS

I understand that the railway companies have ordered during the past 12 months approximately 24,000 tons of steel sleepers. Experiments are being made with different types of steel sleepers, and I hope that the experience gained will lead to a further extension of their use.

Mr. C. WILLIAMS

How many have the Great Western Company ordered?

Mr. THOMAS

I could not give all the details now, but I am sure that the House generally will, appreciate that this is a satisfactory start with this innovation.
