§ 28. Mr. ROSBOTHAMasked the President of the Board of Education how many scholars in the elementary schools of England and Wales are being supplied daily with milk; is he satisfied with the Reports received as to the benefits derived; and, if so, will he give every encouragement to local education authorities to extend the system?
§ Sir C. TREVELYANThe National Milk Publicity Council estimate that about 350,000 school children are now receiving milk under their schemes. I am not able to say how many children are receiving milk under arrangements made by the Local Education Authorities, but I am taking steps to obtain this information. The reports received as to the benefits derived by the children are very satisfactory. I am anxious to give every encouragement to the extension of the movement in the schools, and I am now considering the most effective means by which I can do so.
§ Mr. McSHANEMay I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether any grants for this purpose have been made from the Exchequer?
§ Sir C. TREVELYANCertainly, where the local authorities have spent the money, they have got the grant.
§ Mr. SMITHERSWhat steps are being taken to see that this milk is free from tuberculosis?
§ Sir C. TREVELYANI believe that the National Milk Publicity Council are very particular about that matter.
§ Mr. FREEMANIs the right hon. Gentleman in favour of every child having this daily supply of milk?
§ Sir C. TREVELYANI should be very glad to see it.
