HC Deb 16 April 1930 vol 237 cc2883-4
19. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what are the estimated savings on this year's Navy Estimates as a result of the Three-Power Naval Agreement achieved at the 1930 Naval Conference?

Mr. ALEXANDER

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to my statement on the Naval Estimates. A further statement will be made in due course when the proposals for the 1930 construction programme have been formulated.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Does that mean that there will be an increase on the Estimates that have already been passed by the House?

Mr. ALEXANDER

I made the position very plain in my statement on the Estimates—that we had arrived at a very large saving in construction as a result of the policy announced by the Prime Minister in July, 1929, but that it might be necessary for me to introduce a Supplementary Estimate.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

That means that there will be an increase on the Estimates passed by this House?

Mr. ALEXANDER

Yes, but I think that the hon. and gallant Member should be grateful for the reduction already secured.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

I would be more grateful if it was greater, and so would the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
