HC Deb 15 April 1930 vol 237 cc2715-6
44. Mr. FOOT

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he is now in a position to make any further statement upon the proposed scheme for constructing a bridge across the Tamar?

Mr. THOMAS

We are awaiting the report of the engineering inquiry to which I referred in the reply given on the 1st April to the hon. Member for Devon-port (Mr. Hore-Belisha).

Mr. FOOT

Can the right hon. Gentleman say how long the inquiry is likely to last?

Mr. THOMAS

The hon. Member will remember that I attach so much importance to something being done in this connection that we sent an engineer, and it would be unfair to prejudge the case until we have had his report. It is only fair to say that we are speeding it up.

Viscountess ASTOR

Will the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind that unemployment is increasing in Plymouth and Devonport?

Mr. THOMAS

Yes, and it is because of that fact that we are for the first time attaching importance to a useful scheme for Devonport.
