HC Deb 07 April 1930 vol 237 cc1765-6
41. Viscount LYMINGTON

asked the Minister of Agriculture the acreage of land in the parish of Barton Stacey, in Hampshire, upon which tithe is not being paid?

Mr. N. BUXTON

The Ministry has no jurisdiction and is not concerned with the collection of annual tithe rent-charge, but I am informed by Queen Anne's Bounty, the tithe owners, that tithe rent-charge is not being paid in respect of some 1,500 acres in the parish of Barton Stacey, while the tithe rent-charge on a further 600 acres is in arrear and is being recovered with difficulty after application to the County Court.

Viscount LYMINGTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the uncultivated land in the parish of Barton Stacey largely coincides with the area upon which tithe is not being paid, and that this is an instance of the deterrent effect of tithe on the cultivation of arable land?

Mr. BUXTON

I am aware of that.
