62. Major GRAHAM POLE

asked the Secretary of State for India if there is any bar to the admittance of members of the depressed classes into the Indian Civil Service and the other superior services; and, if not, whether he can give information showing the number of members of the depressed classes who have been admitted into the Indian Civil Service and the other services under the Central Government since 1922?

The SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Mr. Wedgwood Benn

I cannot without inquiry from the Government of India, which I will undertake, if my hon. and gallant Friend desires, supply the particulars asked for in the latter part of the question. There is, of course, no bar to the admission of members of the depressed classes as such to the superior services.

Major POLE

Will the right hon. Gentleman be good enough to get this information?

Mr. BENN

Certainly, if my hon. and gallant Friend will tell me precisely the form in which he wishes the inquiry made.
