HC Deb 29 October 1929 vol 231 c5
27. Colonel ENGLAND (for Sir WILLIAM EDGE)

asked the Minister of Transport the proportion of British quarried stone used in connection with any of the road constructional work sanctioned for the relief of unemployment by the present Parliament; and whether it is drawn in all these cases from available local sources?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Herbert Morrison)

The use of British materials is made a condition of all grants which are made to highway authorities from the Road Fund at rates above the normal on the ground that the works to which they apply have been expedited for the relief of unemployment. I am not aware of any scheme of this nature, sanctioned since the opening of the present Parliament, in which other than British quarried stone has been used. Stone from available local sources is used to the fullest extent, provided it is suitable for the purpose.
