90. Mr. T. LEWIS

asked the President of the Board of Trade the names of the three counsel who represented the Board of Trade at the inquiry into the sinking of the steamer "Vestris," and the amount of fees paid to each.

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. W. R. Smith)

Counsel representing the Board of Trade were Sir Thomas Inskip, K.C., M.P., Mr. Norman Raeburn, K.C., and Mr. L. F. C. Darby. The fees payable to each were £1,031 3s., £2,149 and £1,236 15s. respectively.

Can the hon. Gentleman say the basis on which these fees are paid to the law officers; and in what manner were the briefs marked?
