HC Deb 13 November 1929 vol 231 cc2034-5
72. Sir KINGSLEY WOOD

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether any communication has been received from the Australian Government in relation to the proposed suspension of the assisted migration scheme?

Mr. PONSONBY

A telegram has been received from the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia stating that it has been decided to suspend for the present the grant of assisted passages to Australia. I have received no communication on the subject from any of the State Governments, but I would point out that under the arrangements hitherto in force the grant of assisted passages is a matter for the Commonwealth and not for the State Governments.

Mr. EVERARD

Might it not be a good thing if the Lord Privy Seal went there, in view of the difficulties in regard to employment in this country, in order to put the matter right?
