HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1689-90
3. Major THOMAS

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he is aware of the increased importation of foreign steel in South Wales, involving the closing down of several steel works and the unemployment of many thousands of men; and whether he will recommend to His Majesty's Government that measures must be taken to prevent the importation of an article which we are well able to manufacture ourselves?

Mr. THOMAS

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given on the 5th November by my right hon. Friend, the President of the Board of Trade, to the hon. Member for Moseley (Mr. Hannon).

Mr. T. GRIFFITHS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the firms with which the hon. Member is connected, Messrs. Richard Thomas and Company, and the Grove End Steel and Tinplate Company, are the biggest sinners in purchasing these foreign articles?

Mr. SPEAKER

We cannot go into the merits of firms at Question Time.
