HC Deb 12 November 1929 vol 231 cc1703-4
28. Mr. HARRIS

asked the President of the Board of Trade the number and declared values of British-made pianos ex ported from this country for the periods January to June in 1925 and 1929, respectively?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

The exports of complete pianos of United Kingdom manufacture from this country, registered during the first six months of 1925, numbered 3,254, of a total declared value of £158,203, and, during the first six months of 1929, numbered 1,552, of a total declared value of £78,679.

Mr. HARRIS

Are we to understand that there has been a drop in the export of pianos in spite of the imposition of the tariff?

Mr. GRAHAM

There has certainly been during that period a heavy drop in exportations.

Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Has there not been a great increase in the import of foreign pianos?
