HC Deb 11 November 1929 vol 231 cc1523-4
51. Mr. BUTLER

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he can give the House any statistics or information as to the extent of unemployment in rural areas?

Mr. N. BUXTON

No statistics are available as to the extent of rural unemployment, but I receive periodical reports from the Ministry's local officers in regard to the position amongst agricultural workers. The latest information received indicates that there is a certain amount of unemployment amongst casual workers and also—to a lesser extent—amongst regular workers in certain districts.

Sir H. CROFT

Is it not likely that unemployment will be increased unless the right hon. Gentleman takes active steps to prevent the importation of bounty-fed cattle?
