HC Deb 11 November 1929 vol 231 cc1524-5
80. Mr. ALLEN

asked the Minister of Labour the annual cost of the adminis- tration of unemployment insurance; the number of individuals employed; the average number of hours worked; and the number of salaries paid of £400 a year and over.

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Lawson)

As to the first part of the question, the cost of administration of Unemployment Insurance in the year 1929–30, as shown in the Parliamentary Estimates, is £5,185,000. This includes the cost of Employment Exchanges in so far as they deal with insured persons, and covers all expenses incurred, whether by the Ministry of Labour or other Departments. As regards the remainder of the question, I will extract the figures for the total staff of the Ministry, so far as available, and send them to the hon. Member, but I should point out that the figures will not relate exclusively to Unemployment Insurance, for which separate figures of numbers of staff can not be given.

Mr. E. BROWN

Will the hon. Gentle man put in the number of officials at Kew?

Mr. W. J. BROWN

Will the hon. Gentleman also state the number of civil servants employed in the Exchanges who are receiving less than £3 a week?
