HC Deb 11 November 1929 vol 231 c1515
52. Mr. BUTLER

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether the Government contemplates making the staining of imported red clover seed compulsory?

Mr. N. BUXTON

I consider that the requirements of the Regulations made under the Seeds Act, 1920, which pro vide, inter alia, that a statement as to the country of origin must be made in the case of a sale of any of the principal kinds of grass and clover seeds, serve as a sufficient safeguard for agriculturists against the use of seed coming from countries where the conditions make them unadaptable for use in this country.

Mr. BUTLER

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the opinion of prominent agriculturists is that the staining of imported seed would be very much more efficacious?

Mr. BUXTON

I have not received any representations to that effect.

Mr. BUTLER

May I ask what is the objection to imposing such a restriction as staining?

Mr. BUXTON

I think that that should be the subject of another question.
