HC Deb 06 May 1929 vol 227 cc1940-1
17. Mr. DAY

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether the quarantine station through which pedigree stock intended for export to the Dominions will pass immediately before shipment has now been completed at the East India Dock, London; and whether negotiations have been finally settled for the establishment of a similar station at Glasgow?

Mr. AMERY

I have been asked to answer this question. The quarantine station at the East India Dock was, opened on the 4th April, 1928. Since that date, 574 pedigree animals have passed through the station en route to various Dominions. It was decided not to build a quarantine station at Glasgow until experience had been obtained of the extent to which the London quarantine station would be utilised. The accommodation at the London station is felt to be sufficient to meet the present demands of the trade.

Mr. DAY

Are we to understand that the question of the Glasgow station is still open, and will be considered?

Mr. AMERY

Certainly, but at present the London station is proving sufficient.
