HC Deb 26 March 1929 vol 226 cc2236-7
11. Mr. MORRIS

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been drawn to the number of outrages committed upon women in non-corridor trains; and will he make representations to the railway companies that all passenger trains should have corridor carriages only?

Colonel ASHLEY

So far as my information goes, deplorable incidents such as those to which the hon. Member refers are of rare occurrence. I am not prepared to press railway companies to discontinue entirely the use of non-corridor stock, but I will call their attention to the hon. Member's suggestion.

Mr. MORRIS

Has the Minister's attention been drawn to the fact that another murder has been committed in a train with non-corridor carriages, and is it not desirable that non-corridor carriages should be abolished?

Mr. GEOFFREY PETO

Will my right hon. Friend consider recommending to the railway companies that in non-corridor carriages there should be a window or grating between the compartments?

Colonel ASHLEY

I think that the best thing to rely upon is a communication cord which can be reached, or, in the case of ladies, special carriages.
