HC Deb 14 March 1929 vol 226 cc1233-4
6. Mr. R. MORRISON

asked the Home Secretary whether the recent conference on the question of forming a special corps of traffic police arrived at any decision; and whether he can now make a statement on the matter?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I have the proceedings of the conference under my consideration. I am not yet in a position to make any full statement on the subject.

Mr. MORRISON

In view of the great interest in this question, does the right hon. Gentleman anticipate being able to make a public statement on the matter soon?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

No, not in the very near future. The proposals which I have seen in the Press would lead to a very considerable alteration in the police force, and I think I may say that I do not see any concurrence in the conference upon any such large scheme.

Mr. HAYES

Cannot the right hon. Gentleman decide whether he should not make some observations on this question to the Royal Commission?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

Surely, they have had evidence on this point.
