HC Deb 13 March 1929 vol 226 c1103
7. Mr. SAKLATVALA

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what was the net sum of money out of the Egyptian indemnity of £500,000 that was handed over to the Government of the Sudan; what instructions were given to the Government of the Sudan for the use of this gift; and what has been the actual use made of this money?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

The net sum handed over to the Sudan Government, after the payment of compensation and medical expenses referred to in the Estimate presented to the House in February, 1925, was £473,103. This sum was to be devoted to a programme of expenditure on medical, educational and charitable objects in the Sudan and is now being used for those purposes. The hon. Member will find full details of the instructions given to the Sudan Government and the actual use made of this money in the annex to the Sudan Annual Report for 1927 which was laid as a White Paper yesterday.
